Intimate Piercing Sizes and Materials

When you look at a product page, you may see several measurements and materials. Between bar thickness, wearable length, ring diameter, titanium, stainless steel, and gold finishes, it can be easy to feel lost. Yet these details are what help you choose intimate jewelry that is comfortable to wear.

A bar that is too short may place pressure on the area. Conversely, a bar that is too long or a ring that is too wide may move, rub against underwear, and catch more easily. Color alone is not enough to identify a metal either. Silver-colored jewelry may be made from titanium, stainless steel, or simply covered with a finish. A gold-colored piece may be gold-tone steel, gold-plated, vermeil, or solid gold.

This guide explains the sizes and materials used for women’s intimate piercing jewelry. It will help you read product pages more easily, compare two pieces, and understand which details to ask for when information is missing.

The most important advice: there is no universal size for intimate piercing jewelry. The placement, channel angle, anatomy, possible swelling, and stage of healing must all be considered. When in doubt, ask a professional piercer to measure the jewelry you already wear.

1. Understand piercing jewelry measurements

On a product page, the same number can refer to very different measurements. One piece listed as 8 mm may have an 8 mm wearable bar length, while another may have an 8 mm inner ring diameter. Always check the name of the measurement before choosing.

  • Bar thickness refers to the diameter of the metal passing through the piercing channel.
  • Wearable bar length refers to the usable section between the two ends.
  • Inner diameter refers to the open space inside a ring or circular barbell.
  • Ball or bead diameter indicates the size of the ends.
  • Decoration dimensions indicate the width and height of a motif, crystal, zirconia stone, or pendant.

Ring sizes used in traditional jewelry cannot be used as a reference for piercing jewelry. A finger ring is measured according to finger circumference, while a piercing ring is generally described by its bar thickness and inner diameter.

2. Bar thickness and the Gauge system

Thickness refers to the section passing through the piercing channel. In France and most of Europe, it is usually stated in millimeters. Some stores and manufacturers still use the American Gauge system, abbreviated with the letter “g.”

This system works in the opposite way to what you might expect. The lower the number, the thicker the bar. A 14 g bar is therefore thicker than a 16 g bar.

This table is only intended to convert units. It cannot be used to determine the correct thickness for an intimate piercing remotely.

Why do a few tenths of a millimeter matter so much?

A bar that is thicker than the piercing channel should never be forced through. Doing so would stretch the piercing without preparation. Conversely, jewelry that is much thinner than what you normally wear may distribute pressure over a smaller area and may not provide the expected support.

If you are considering changing the thickness, discuss it with your piercer. This is not simply a style difference, especially for an intimate piercing or an initial placement.

3. How do you measure bar length?

For a straight or curved barbell, often called a banana barbell, the length normally refers to the section between the two ends. Balls, beads, rhinestones, and decorative elements are not included in this measurement.

On a curved barbell, the measurement is taken from one end of the shaft to the other. You should not follow the full outer curve. This is one reason why a photo alone is not enough to estimate jewelry size.

How can you tell if a bar is too short?

The ends may leave marks on the skin, appear to sink in, or become difficult to grip. You may also feel constant pressure, particularly if the area swells or when the jewelry moves.

How can you tell if a bar is too long?

The jewelry rotates easily, catches on underwear, or moves considerably. A bar that is too long may also place repeated stress on the piercing channel with every movement. This does not mean that you should choose the shortest bar possible. There must be enough room without excessive movement.

4. Understand ring diameter

For a ring, clicker, or circular barbell, the stated diameter generally refers to the inner diameter. This is the open space inside the circle, not the total width of the jewelry.

Two rings may have the same inner diameter but different outer dimensions if one has a thicker bar than the other.

A ring that is too small

It may feel tight, pull on the piercing channel, leave marks on the tissue, or alter the natural angle of the piercing. A smaller diameter may look more discreet in a photo, but it must still provide enough space.

A ring that is too large

It moves more and is more likely to catch. It may also appear much more noticeable than in a photo worn by someone with different anatomy.

5. Is there a standard size for intimate jewelry?

No. Even when two customers have piercings with the same name, the depth, angle, and tissue thickness may differ. The correct size therefore depends on the individual and the way the piercing was placed.

The choice depends in particular on:

  • the exact piercing type;
  • individual anatomy;
  • the depth and direction of the channel;
  • possible swelling;
  • the chosen shape, such as a banana barbell, ring, or circular barbell;
  • the ball diameter and size of decorative elements;
  • the weight of a chain, charm, or pendant;
  • the stage of healing.

A commonly listed measurement is not necessarily right for you. Be cautious with expressions such as “standard VCH size” or “universal size.” They may offer a general commercial reference, but they do not replace an actual measurement.

6. How can you find the size of your current jewelry?

The simplest solution is to ask the studio that fitted the jewelry for its dimensions. A piercer can check the thickness, length, and diameter using a gauge or suitable calipers.

Check the information provided after the piercing

Some studios record the jewelry specifications on a follow-up card, invoice, or aftercare sheet. You may find:

  • the material;
  • the bar thickness;
  • the wearable bar length or ring diameter;
  • the end size;
  • the manufacturer or product reference.

Ask a piercer to measure the jewelry

This is the safest method when the jewelry is still being worn, the piercing is not fully healed, or you do not know how the size was originally stated. The piercer can also check the tightness, closure, and overall fit.

Measure removed jewelry yourself

If the piercing is fully healed and the jewelry comes out easily, preferably use clean calipers. Measure separately:

  • the bar thickness;
  • the wearable length between the two ends;
  • the inner diameter of a ring;
  • the diameter of the balls or beads;
  • the size of a crystal, zirconia stone, or pendant.

Avoid: do not remove recent jewelry simply to measure it. The channel may begin to tighten quickly. If you are concerned that you may not be able to reinsert it, ask a piercer for help.

7. Which material should you choose for an intimate piercing?

Material deserves as much attention as size. Labels such as “gold,” “silver,” “steel,” and “medical grade” do not always provide enough information. Check the composition of the bar, whether there is plating, and the type of finish.

When comparing two pieces, check:

  • the exact name of the metal or alloy;
  • the ASTM or ISO standard when stated;
  • the difference between solid metal and a coating;
  • the type of plating, rhodium finish, or colored coating;
  • the quality of the polish;
  • the threading and closure system;
  • the intended use, particularly for an initial piercing or a healed piercing.
Material or finish What to look for Point of caution

925 sterling silver The composition, any rhodium finish, and required healing stage. Sterling silver is not suitable for an initial piercing.
Brass or bronze The base metal and applied coating. These metals are mainly used in costume jewelry and decorative elements.
Plating or colored finish The metal beneath the decorative layer and the care instructions. The coating may wear, scratch, or lose its shine.

Titanium

Titanium is valued for its light weight and good resistance to corrosion. It can also be anodized to create several colors without conventional paint. For jewelry described as suitable for an initial piercing, look for a clear reference such as ASTM F-136, ASTM F-67, ASTM F1295, or ISO 5832-3 depending on the type of titanium.

Some product pages use the English word titanium. This simply means titanium, but it does not identify the exact quality of the alloy on its own.

Surgical steel and stainless steel

These expressions are often used as though they all refer to the same material. In reality, several alloys may be marketed under these names. A designation such as 316L provides information about the steel family, but it does not automatically confirm implant-grade quality.

Stainless steel resists corrosion well, but “stainless” does not mean indestructible. A scratched surface, damaged plating, repeated exposure to chemicals, or poor maintenance can affect the appearance of the jewelry.

Niobium

Niobium has long been used in body piercing and can be colored through anodization. However, it does not have the same official implant-grade designation as certain titanium alloys. Traceability and the manufacturer’s reputation therefore remain important.

Yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold

Gold color depends on the metals mixed with pure gold. Yellow gold retains a warm tone, rose gold generally contains more copper, and white gold uses metals that lighten its color. Tolerance therefore also depends on the alloy composition.

For solid-gold jewelry, check the karat value. A 14-karat piece does not contain the same proportion of gold as an 18-karat piece. Pure gold, often called 24-karat gold, is too soft for many everyday piercing bars.

925 silver and sterling silver

The terms 925 silver, sterling silver, and solid silver generally describe an alloy containing 92.5% silver. Some pieces receive a rhodium finish to increase shine and reduce tarnishing.

Silver may be suitable for certain decorative pieces worn in a fully healed piercing, but it is not recommended for an initial piercing. Watch for a dull or rough surface or any unusual discomfort.

Brass and bronze

Brass and bronze are common in costume jewelry, charms, pendants, and decorative components. They may also be used as a base metal beneath plating. They should not be confused with titanium or documented piercing-grade steel.

When the bar composition is unclear, avoid using the jewelry in a recent or sensitive piercing. A piece may look beautiful without being suitable for prolonged contact with a piercing channel.

8. Understand finishes and colors

Terms such as gold color, gold-tone steel, black steel, gold-plated, vermeil, rhodium-plated, and chrome-plated mainly describe appearance. They do not mean that the entire piece is made from the metal mentioned.

Gold-plated and gold-tone steel

Gold-plated or gold-tone steel jewelry has a colored layer applied over a base metal. This layer may wear through friction, chlorine, salt water, perfume, and certain care products.

Vermeil

Vermeil normally combines a sterling silver base with gold plating that meets specific criteria. It remains different from solid gold and is not automatically suitable for an initial piercing.

Rhodium plating

Rhodium may be applied to silver or certain alloys to alter their color and shine. Rhodium-plated jewelry is not platinum jewelry. Like any coating, the rhodium layer may eventually wear.

Black steel and other colors

Black, pink, blue, or gold-colored jewelry may have received a surface treatment. Always ask which technique was used and what metal lies beneath the color. Shade alone is never enough to assess bar quality.

9. Stones, rhinestones, crystals, and cubic zirconia

Stones and decorative elements mainly affect style, weight, and care. They do not change the bar thickness, but a very wide motif or heavy stone may affect comfort.

Rhinestones and crystals

The word rhinestone refers to a bright decoration, often made from glass or crystal. “Crystal” may also be used as a commercial term. These words do not mean that the jewelry contains a diamond or natural gemstone.

Zircon and cubic zirconia

On many product pages, the word zircon actually refers to cubic zirconia. This synthetic stone is valued for its brilliance. It should not be confused with natural zircon, which is a different gemstone.

Semi-precious and precious stones

Opal, ruby, sapphire, turquoise, quartz, or another stone may be natural, synthetic, or imitation. The product page should state what is actually used. For comfort, focus on the quality of the setting and the absence of sharp edges.

A loose stone, raised prong, or empty setting may catch on tissue and trap residue. Stop wearing the jewelry if the setting appears damaged.

10. Understand ASTM and ISO standards

ASTM and ISO standards are not brands. They define characteristics relating to composition, mechanical properties, and testing methods for a material.

References commonly seen in professional piercing include:

  • ASTM F-136 covers Ti-6Al-4V ELI titanium alloy used for surgical implants.
  • ASTM F-67 covers unalloyed titanium intended for implant applications.
  • ASTM F1295 covers Ti-6Al-7Nb titanium alloy intended for implants.
  • ISO 5832-3 defines requirements for a titanium alloy used in surgical implants.
  • ASTM F-138 covers stainless steel intended for the manufacture of surgical implants.
  • ISO 5832-1 also covers certain stainless steels used for implants.

The presence of a standard number in a description is not always enough. For an initial piercing, a reputable professional should be able to rely on traceability and, where necessary, a material certificate or batch certificate.

11. Nickel, allergies, and European regulations

Nickel may cause contact allergy in some people. Redness, itching, irritation, or weeping skin after changing jewelry should prompt you to seek professional advice.

European REACH regulations limit the amount of nickel released by parts inserted into a piercing. The limit for these components is below 0.2 μg of nickel per cm² per week. For items intended to remain in direct and prolonged contact with the skin, the limit is 0.5 μg per cm² per week.

These rules concern nickel release, not only whether nickel is present in the metal. Steel may contain nickel while still complying with a release limit. Conversely, worn plating may change the surface that is actually in contact with the skin.

Claims such as “hypoallergenic” and “nickel-free” should therefore not be used without evidence. If you are allergic or highly sensitive, check the exact composition and ask your piercer for advice.

12. Polish, threading, closures, and tightness

A good material is not enough if the jewelry is poorly made. The section passing through the channel should be smooth, with no deep scratches, burrs, rust, sharp edges, or polishing residue.

Polish

A smooth surface reduces friction. A hammered, textured, or intentionally rough finish may look attractive on a pendant, but it should not be present on the section that passes through the piercing.

Internal threading

On internally threaded jewelry, the bar remains smooth and the screw thread is located inside. The end carries the small threaded section.

External threading

With external threading, the screw thread is located directly on the bar. This rough section may pass through the piercing channel during insertion or removal. For an initial piercing, professional guidance generally favors internal threading or threadless systems.

Threadless systems

A threadless or press-fit system uses an end held in place by tension. It should fit securely and should not have unusual movement.

Closures, hinges, and tightness

A clicker ring should close securely. A threaded ball should remain tight without being forced. On a circular barbell, regularly check that both balls remain in place. If a hinge catches, a closure opens on its own, or a ball frequently unscrews, have the jewelry checked.

13. New or healed piercing: the criteria are different

For an initial piercing or a piercing that has not healed

The size, shape, and material should be selected by the piercer. The jewelry should be sterilizable, have a smooth surface, and provide enough room for the normal changes in the area.

Avoid in particular:

  • materials whose composition is not clearly stated;
  • costume jewelry made from brass or bronze used as the bar;
  • fragile plating and decorative finishes;
  • sterling silver;
  • jewelry that is too heavy or fitted with long charms;
  • external threading that passes through the channel;
  • jewelry changes carried out without professional supervision.

For a fully healed piercing

You can choose from a wider range of styles, colors, and decorative elements. Size and quality still remain essential. An older piercing may react to jewelry that is too tight, too heavy, rough, oxidized, or poorly tolerated.

15. Frequently asked questions about sizes and materials

What is the standard size for a women’s intimate piercing?

There is no universal size. The piercing type, depth, angle, and anatomy determine the correct measurement. The best reference is the jewelry you already wear, measured by your piercer.

What do 14 g and 16 g mean?

These are bar thicknesses expressed using the Gauge system. A 14 g bar measures approximately 1.6 mm, while a 16 g bar measures approximately 1.2 mm.

How do you measure a banana barbell?

Measure the usable section between the two ends, excluding the balls. To avoid errors caused by the curvature, use calipers or ask a piercer to measure the jewelry.

How do you measure a ring or circular barbell?

Measure the open inner space from one inside edge to the other. Do not use the total outer width of the jewelry.

Titanium or surgical steel: which should you choose?

Do not rely on the metal name alone. For some titanium alloys, look for ASTM F-136 or ISO 5832-3. For certain steels, look for ASTM F-138 or ISO 5832-1. Titanium is generally lighter, while steel is often denser.

Does a gold finish mean that the jewelry is made from gold?

No. It may be plating or a coating applied over another metal. Solid-gold jewelry should clearly state its karat value.

What is the difference between yellow, rose, and white gold?

The difference comes from the alloy composition. Added metals alter the color and may also affect tolerance. The karat value indicates the proportion of gold present in the jewelry.

Is 316L steel always implant grade?

No. The term 316L describes a steel family, but it does not by itself prove compliance with ASTM F-138 or ISO 5832-1.

Can 925 sterling silver be worn in an intimate piercing?

Sterling silver is not suitable for an initial piercing or one that is still healing. For a fully healed piercing, check the manufacturer’s intended use and remove the jewelry if discomfort or deterioration appears.

What does cubic zirconia mean?

Cubic zirconia is a bright synthetic stone commonly used in jewelry. It is not a diamond and should not be confused with natural zircon.

Can jewelry rust or corrode?

High-quality metal resists corrosion better, but worn plating, a scratched surface, chemicals, or poor composition can still damage jewelry. Stop wearing any piece that develops rust or a rough surface.

What should you do if no size is stated?

Do not order at random. Ask for the bar thickness, wearable length, and, for a ring, the exact inner diameter before purchasing.
